Description
Your morning announcement team since 2016, the Newtown Morning News Team broadcasts live every school day. This is a fully student-run program. Crew members serve as announcers, audio technician, video technician, and director. Newtown students occasionally appear for special announcements and events. Members of the team must be on time and in the lab by 8:50 every morning.
Eligibility
The team has eight members, four from each grade level. A new team is picked and developed each nine weeks to increase opportunities. We have the youngest live news team in the district. At the other schools this club is reserved for fourth and 5th grades. The safety patrol coordinator has worked with our team to allow members of the safety patrol to take a leave of absence from their morning station to be on the news team.
How to Join the Newtown Morning News Team
At the start of the new school year I pick students that were on the team in the second grade to get the announcements up and running on Day 1. From that point on the teachers have to email me nominations and I pick from those nominations. The only thing I ask is that they not be students that are frequently arriving after 8:50 AM. We go live at 8:55 AM, and I need the kids there on time.
Commitment
Team members meet in the Innovation Lab every school day from 8:45 AM - 9:10 AM to prepare and deliver the morning announcements.
While we operate from a perspective of expanded opportunity, I respect the teacher’s needs and if the teacher needs to pull their student from the team due to behavior or academic needs then the student will not remain on the team.
